Acadia National Park Icon System

Icon System, Pattern-Making, Image Manipulation
Acadia National Park is a well-loved and world-renowned national park located in Maine. As breathtaking as the park itself is, elements of the experience — such as wayfinding materials, the visitor center, and the gift shop — can be improved. Throughout the course of a semester, I created a set of 20 pictrograms that can be applied in a variety of ways throughout the park.

The first step was research, conceptualization, testing, and refinement of the pictrograms. Next, I used seven of my pictograms to create a seamless pattern in both one color and multiple colors. In Photoshop, I then rendered digital prototypes of three pattern applications and three pictogram applications. My designs, should they be implemented in Acadia, would create stronger brand recognition which would not only give visitors a safer and more seamless experience in the park, but also generate more traffic and revenue for the park.
