Jane Eyre Edition
Publication Design, Illustration, Information Design
For this edition of Jane Eyre (my favorite book), I focused on the interior elements as well as the cover. The lock and key imagery on the cover symbolizes several aspects of the book, both literal and metaphorical. One interpretation is that is represents the presence of Bertha Mason locked in the attic at Thornfield. Another, and more optimistic one, is that throughout the book Jane learns about herself and unlocks the parts of herself that her difficult childhood forced her to hide. In the words of Rochester:
“I see at intervals the glance of a curious sort of bird through the close-set bars of a cage: a vivid, restless, resolute captive is there; were it but free, it would soar cloud-high.”
The interior of the book features a bird-patterned endpaper (in reference to the above quote and other instances of bird symbolism throughout the book), a map of real and estimated fictional locations, and Jane Eyre’s family tree. The original publication of the book was broken into the three volumes, and in this edition, I have returned to these divisions. The volume divider pages are decorated with engravings from the 1840s that represent the important location of that volume — Gateshead, Thornfield, and the moors.
